Why you need a Stage Rigging System inspection:
Rigging systems are subjected to varied amounts of use and, in some cases, abuse. To insure that your system is operating safely and efficiently, it should be inspected on a regular basis. In addition, OSHA requires that all hoisting machinery be inspected annually.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How often should my equipment be inspected? The amount of use determines the frequency. OSHA specifically requires that all hoisting equipment be inspected at least once a year.
Who sees the report? The report should be sent to the person that requested the inspection.
Can people work onstage while an inspection is in process? An inspection is best conducted when the stage is clear of all scenery and props and the stage area is quiet.
What needs to be done to prepare for an inspection? Clear the space as much as is practical but please do not clean up the space as dirt, metal shavings, etc. tell a part of the story.
Inspection Reports and Records

Following the professional survey of the stage rigging system, an inspection report should be prepared which includes the entire stage, from the floor to the ceiling, and all parts between. The report should be submitted listing alldeficiencies and supported with photographs and/or video. This report should be shared with appropriate administrators and staff for review of the written proposal and to schedule necessary follow up actions.
Careful record keeping in a stage file, one for each stage in the building, should contain the following items:
- Maintenance recordsPrevious inspection reportsCopy of stage manual
- Contact information for stage contractor
- Pictures
- Log of problems noted
- Records of all communications regarding the system
